ONE YEAR OF BOXYCHARM!

I have zero memory of how I stumbled upon Boxycharm last year but I did, I signed up for a subscription, and the rest is history!

Hard to believe that April 2018's box was my 12th one and it's been one whole year! To mark this occasion, I thought why not write up a review of sorts for my first real blog post.

If by some chance anyone reading this isn't familiar with Boxycharm, here's the gist: a monthly beauty box subscription of 4-5 full sized(!) items ranging from cosmetics, skin care and beauty tools. $21 monthly (+ shipping to Canada) for a box of amazing goodies always valued at over $100.

I was immediately hooked after receiving my first box in May 2017 and pretty much never disappointed (minus one exception, which I'll get to later). The range or products is great and I've discovered many brands I hadn't heard of before or just hadn't tried yet, some of which are now in my all time favourites.

The best way to do this, I figured, is to just go in order of the months. List the month and its theme. I'll be giving each box a rating based on the products and how much I did or did not enjoy them.

May 2017: Makeup Is Art

Brands included in this box: The BrowGal, Crown Pro, IBY Beauty, Temptu.

Products consisted of liquid highlighter, two brushes and two palettes. Doesn't sound too interesting or diverse but it was actually a pleasant surprise.

Round Contour Brush by Crown Brush, valued at $24.99. This paddle brush is intended for liquid and cream products mainly, but it works on powder, too. It's super soft and creates amazing full coverage. This is not a brush I use on myself - I added it to my professional kit instead.

Liquid Glow by Temptu, valued at $29.50. I was very excited about this highlighter as it's Temptu's first hand applied one - they specialize in amazing airbrush products. This liquid highlighter has a rose-gold tint and definitely achieves a stunning glowing complexion. This too was added to my kit rather than for personal use.

Brow Brush by The BrowGal, valued at $14. This is a double ended brush - one end is the brush itself and the other end a spoolie. The brush is one of the better brow brushes I've used; it fills in the brows nicely while able to be precise at the same time.

Convertible Brow Palette by The BrowGal, valued at $35. This little palette is in my top 5 favourites of all time for brow products. There are three shades, each with a different tone - warm, ash and neutral, so it's very easy to mix the perfect colour for yourself. Even better - the product works as a duo as well! It can be used wet as a pomade and will revert back to its dry consistency where it can be used as a powder.

Highlight & Contour Palette by IBY Beauty, valued at $25. This has become my most reliable contour product/palette. Again, it's super easy to mix and create the right contour colour for yourself. The downside, for me, is that the highlight shades aren't very pigmented or are just too dark for my skin tone. I added this to my kit as well.
The total value for the May 2017 box = $128.49.
Overall rating: 4/5

                                 June 2017: Downtown Charm
Brands included in this box: Artist Couture, Biobelle, Luxie Beauty, Ofra, RealHer.
Products consisted of three facial masks, a makeup brush, loose highlighter, liquid lipstick and an eyeshadow palette.

3 Sheet Masks by Biobelle Cosmetics, valued at $14.97. Out of the five options, from left to right, I received the first three. Admittedly, I'm not much of a face mask person - the one I kept for myself to try was the primer one, and gave the others as gifts.

Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick by Ofra Cosmetics, valued at $19.90. I got the more berry shade of the two, called "San Ana". The formula is actually very nice to wear and apply, but I am really not a fan of the shade on myself. I added it to my kit.

Diamond Glow Powder by Artist Couture, valued at $26.99. I knew immediately that I'd be adding this loose highlighter to my kit, which I was excited about. The product is very versatile; it can be used not just as a regular face highlight, but can be used on the eyes, lips and body as well.

Pro Precision Tapered Face Brush 640 by Luxie Beauty, valued at $24. Thanks to Boxycharm, Luxie has become a top favourite for makeup brushes. This one in particular, a gorgeous rose gold colour, is fantastic for setting powders and highlighting; perfect for applying the Diamond Glow powder!

Eye Shadow Palette by RealHer, valued at $28. Of the three, I received the first one; "Be Your Own Kind of Beauty". I adore the message this brand puts out there with their products, not to mention the quality is superb.
The total value for the June 2017 box = $113.86.
Overall rating: 4/5

                                   July 2017: Cutie Pie
Brands included in this box: bareMinerals, Blinc, ColourPop, Project Beauty, Winky Lux.
Products consisted of a liquid lipstick, setting powder duo, setting spray, an eyebrow pencil and eyeshadow palette.

Spray.Set.GO. Makeup Setting Spray by Project Beauty, valued at $32. A nice addition to my kit! A good size product, but still easy enough to travel with. The spray is refreshing and fast drying.

Invisible Light Translucent Powder Duo by bareMinerals, valued at $32. I love this duo. The two finishes - matte and glow, can be used separately or combined. This is perfect for achieving a subtle, natural glow.

Electric Eyes Palette by Blinc, valued at $45. This quickly became one of my favourite eyeshadow palettes. The formula and pigmentation is unreal, and such little goes a long way.

Ultra-Satin Lip by ColourPop, valued at $6.50. ColourPop just might be my top favourite makeup brand ever. While the shade I received, "Lock Diary" wouldn't be my first choice, their satin lip formula is near perfect.

Uni-Brow Universal Eyebrow Pencil by Winky Lux, valued at $12. Once I got a hang of it, this became one of my go-to's for my brows. The triangle shape of the product makes it incredibly easy to shape and define, and the spoolie end is the perfect brush.
The total value of the July 2017 box = $127.50.
Overall rating: 4.5/5

                          August 2017: Beach Please
Brands included in this box: The Beauty Crop, BellaPierre, PUR, Royal & Langnickel, Tarte.
Products consisted of a pair of false lashes, eyeshadow palette, gel eyeliner, liquid lipstick and a trio brush set.

#GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick by The Beauty Crop, valued at $14.95. A nice nude shade that has a matte finish. With a good primer, it shouldn't be too dry.

Pro Eyelashes by PUR, valued at $14. "Diva" was the pair I received, which is the less dramatic of the two. If taken care of properly, you can get quite a bit of use out of these!

Waterproof Gel Eyeliner by BellaPierre, valued at $15. The shade is "Ebony" and the formula is very smooth and creamy to apply. But with that comes the danger of smudging! That being said, this is one of the better gel liners I've used. It's fantastically pigmented.

Rainforest of the Sea: Volume II Palette by Tarte, valued at $36. Love pretty much everything about this palette; completely unique and beautiful.

MODA Pro 3-Piece Brush Set by Royal & Langnickel, valued at $26. These babies went straight to my kit. The chisel blender brush, first on the left, is one of my favourite brushes ever - it's completely made for perfect contouring.
Total value of the August 2017 box = $105.95
Overall rating: 3.5/5

                        September 2017: Boxy Baddie
Brands included in this box: bareMinerals, Briogeo, ColourPop, MAC, PUR, Studio Makeup.
Products consisted of an eyeshadow palette, makeup brush, a hair mask, liquid lipstick, loose blush, and an eyebrow pencil.

Ultra-Satin Lip by ColourPop, valued at $6.50. Yes, another satin lip by ColourPop, but I will never complain about receiving one of their products. I adore the shade I got this time around, "Littlestitious," which is a nice cool-toned light pink.

Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask by Briogeo, valued at $20. Getting a hair product was different and in my case, unneeded, sadly. I gave this away.

Eyebrows by MAC, valued at $18. This brow pencil ended up in my kit; I received the lighter shade of the two which was just a tad too light for me personally. If I'd gotten the darker shade it would've been perfect.

Face Perfecting Brush by bareMinerals, valued at $28. The way this foundation brush is meant to be used was new to me, so it took some getting used to. It might not be my go-to but I still think it's a great brush.

Soiree Diaries Eyeshadow Palette by PUR, valued at $34. What a gorgeous palette! Beautiful neutral tones, perfect for fall and everyday looks.

Loose Blush by Studio Makeup, valued at $35. As with all loose products, if you're careful then you should have no problem with it. The shade gives a pretty, natural look.
Total value of September 2017 box = $141.50
Overall rating: 3.5/5

                             October 2017: Spellbound
Brands included in this box: Becca Cosmetics, Dr. Brandt, Jonteblu, ncLA, Tarte.
Products consisted of a skincare product, lip liner, a nail kit, liquid lipstick and a highlighter.

Lip Liner Pencil by Jonteblu, valued at $5. There's nothing too special about this lip liner. The formula is a bit too dry to apply easily/comfortably.

PoreDermabrasion by Dr. Brandt, valued at $58. A happy surprise for a skincare product! The retail price is ridiculous so this was a treat.

Nailed It Tool Kit by ncLA, valued at $18. A nail kit. That's it. Just your average nail kit...

Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter by Becca Cosmetics, valued at $38. Becca has become a favourite of mine for pressed highlighters. "Prosecco Pop" is a beautiful gold-champagne.

Tarteist Quick Matte Lip Paint by Tarte, valued at $20. Tarte has some of the best liquid lipsticks in the business. Unfortunately for me, the shade I received, "Homeslice" is kind of horrendous. On me, at least.
Total value of October 2017 = $139.
Overall rating: 2.5/5

                     November 2017: Sweater Weather
Brands included in this box: Cover FX, KNC Beauty, Laqa & Co, Luxie Beauty, Winky Lux.
Products consisted of a travel brush set, lipstick, an eyeshadow palette, three lip masks and setting spray.

Kitten Palette by Winky Lux, valued at $25. A wonderful little palette! It's definitely in my top 5 go-to's.

Illuminating Setting Spray by Cover FX, valued at $31. Easy and fast drying, with the added bonus of being alcohol free, which means it won't dry out your skin. It gives a nice, subtle glow.

Collagen Lip Masks by KNC Beauty, valued at $15. If there was ever a more useless mask product... That's literally all I can think to say. It claims to hydrate, moisturize and plump your lips.

Cloud Lips by LAQA & Co, valued at $17. This lipstick is kind of "meh" for me. The formula feels nice to wear, easy enough to apply, but it transfers. I'm just thankful I got the dark berry instead of the bright red shade.

Quad Eye Travel Set by Luxie Beauty, valued at $32. I'm always happy to receive brushes, especially when they're Luxie. This travel set is perfect for on the go - perfect to add to my kit.
Total value of November 2017 = $120.
Overall rating: 3.5/5

                       December 2017: Glitz & Glam
Brands included in this box: Beaute Basics, Makeup Geek, RealHer, Tarte, Vintage Cosmetics.
Products consisted of a blush palette, highlighter, mascara, bronzer palette and liquid lipstick.

Illuminating Face Highlighter by Vintage Cosmetics, valued at $32. I loved this almost immediately. The packaging is darling, the shade so pretty. It's smooth to apply and easy to keep subtle or build up more of a glow.

Showstopper Creme Stain by Makeup Geek, valued at $12. This is such a lovely nude lipstick. Not very long lasting, however.

Bronze Essentials by Beaute Basics, valued at $39.95. I'm very back and forth about this, but it's a cute little palette. Too much glitter for me personally as I prefer matte bronzers.

Tarteist Last Paint Mascara by Tarte, valued at $23. One of the most popular mascaras around! I wasn't blown away by it by any means, but I do like it. Takes a bit long to dry, so there's a chance of it smudging.

Be Fearless, Be Limitless Blush Kit by RealHer, valued at $32. The third shade is more of a bronzer than anything, but the first two shades are super pretty for a blush. That being said...so. much. glitter. Why!?
Total value of December 2017 = $138.95.
Overall rating: 4/5

                            January 2018: Rock 2018
Brands included in this box: Crown Pro, Dr. Brandt, Girlactik, IT Cosmetics, PUR.
Products consisted of a face primer, liquid lipstick, a face palette, eyebrow pencil and an eyeshadow palette.

Glam Metals Palette by Crown Pro, valued at $29.99. This is a very interesting eyeshadow palette. Metallic finish, can be applied both dry and wet.

Matte Lip Paint by Girlactik, valued at $23. A hit with the formula, a miss with the shade ("Demure").

Pores No More Luminizer Primer by Dr. Brandt, valued at $38. Exactly as it says! The primer can be used three ways - alone, under makeup or mixed in with foundation.

Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil by IT Cosmetics, valued at $24. Based on how much pressure is used, is how you fill in your brows with colour. Very neat.

Bronze and Brighten Cheek Palette by PUR, valued at $34. Added this pretty little palette to my kit. There is far too much glitter/shimmer in all three shades for a daily look.
Total value of January 2018 = $148.99.
Overall rating: 4/5

                         February 2018: Galaxy Glow
Brands included in this box: Cover FX, Crown Pro, Naked Cosmetics, PUR, Vintage Cosmetics.
Products consisted of a lip exfoliator, a highlighter palette, eyeliner pencil, a trio brush set and multi-purpose top coat.

Shimmer Veil by Cover FX, valued at $28. This is a very versatile product. It can be used alone or a finishing top coat on your lips, eyes, etc.

Eyeliner Pencil by Vintage Cosmetics, valued at $21. A great eyeliner pencil - creamy and pigmented.

Holographic Highlighter Palette by Naked Cosmetics, valued at $39.99. Quite tired of all the highlight products by this point- this was the last straw. The shades in this palette are beyond unpractical, but it went to my kit anyway.

Pro Brush Trio by Crown Pro, valued at $29.99. Three excellent face makeup brushes.

X-Faux Lips: Plumping Lip Exfoliator by PUR, valued at $17. As an exfoliator, this pencil works fine enough but I can't say it does what it's supposed to as for the plumping.
Total value of February 2018 = $135.98.
Overall rating: 3.5/5

                               March 2018: Baecation
Brands included in this box: Butter London, Pretty Vulgar, PUR, South Mane Beauty, The Vintage Cosmetic Company.
Products consisted of mascara, an eyeshadow palette, eye masks, a brush trio and blush.

Eye Gels by South Mane Beauty, valued at $9. Three under eye gel masks - I think we know how I feel about masks by now.

Double Decker Lashes Mascara by Butter London, valued at $20. A great mascara for lengthening and volume.

Smokey Eye Makeup Brush Set by The Vintage Cosmetic Company, valued at $23.15. An eye makeup trio brush set that is perfect for on the go.

PURxBoxy Eyeshadow Palette by PUR, valued at $36. This palette has such gorgeous shades - a perfect mix of warm neutrals and bolder, cooler shades.

Make Them Blush Powder by Pretty Vulgar, valued at $26. I received the shade "Hush", the more nude shade of the two. Very pigmented and gorgeous.
Total value of March 2018 = $114.15
Overall rating: 4/5

                                April 2018: Eye Candy
Brands included in this box: Adesse, The BrowGal, ColourPop, Dr. Brandt, Tarte.
Products consisted of eyebrow tint gel, liquid lipstick, a face mask, liquid highlighter and an eyeshadow palette.

Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner by Dr. Brandt, valued at $47. A pore refining mask from Dr. Brandt is probably my only exception for masks. It's not a sheet mask for one, and it's a quality product.

Hi Definition Liquid Lipstick by Adesse, valued at $24. I'm not entirely sure what the 'Hi Definition' name has to do with this, but it's a fine enough lipstick. It claims full coverage and while maybe that's true, it's not too long lasting.

The Instatint: Tinted Eyebrow Gel by The BrowGal, valued at $22. A quick application that looks nice and natural.

You Had Me At Hello Eyeshadow Palette by ColourPop, valued at $18. One of my favourite ColourPop palettes! Gorgeous mauves and neutrals.

Tarteist Pro Glow Liquid Highlighter by Tarte, valued at $29. Aside from my tiredness of highlighters, I'm always happy to get anything from Tarte.
Total value of April 2018 = $140
Overall rating: 3.5/5

And that's been one year of Boxycharm! Lots of ups, a couple downs and I enjoyed every minute of it. Boxy Bash is next (I think?) for Boxycharm's birthday in May. Can't wait to see and test what's in store.
